Our mandate
Region Stockholm is responsible for healthcare, public transport and regional development in Stockholm County 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We also have a mandate to contribute to cultural life.
Region Stockholm is here for our residents. Our vision is to be an equal, open, sustainable and competitive region where everyone is offered equal opportunities and a high quality of life.
We are one of Sweden's largest employers, with 48,000 employees. These include radiographers, urban planners, engineers, cultural strategists and orthopaedic surgeons. In total, about one hundred professions are represented within Region Stockholm.
Healthcare
We are responsible for ensuring that everyone who lives in Stockholm County receives the healthcare and dental care they need. Our operations range from healthcare and health promotion activities to research, education and development. On a typical day, an average of 13,800 patients visit their GP, 80 babies are born in our hospitals and 1,300 people attend our A&E departments.
Medical advances and a growing and ageing population entail new opportunities, circumstances and challenges. All of which we are meeting by continuing to implement the healthcare of the future, the largest-ever investment across the county's healthcare systems.
We are also developing maternity care and advanced home care, mental health services and a primary care strategy for community health services revolving around health centres. Research and partnerships with municipalities and the private sector are also being ramped up.
We are a politically governed organisation with about 80 percent of our funding comprising tax revenue from county residents. The remaining funding stems from the sale of services, patient fees, ticket sales and government grants.
Public transport
Every day, some 700,000 passengers make 2.9 million trips on public transport in Stockholm County. Everyone who lives or spends time in the county has access to extensive, easily accessible and reliable public transport. The different modes of transport – bus, metro, commuter train, local train and archipelago boat services – are coordinated in an expanding transport network.
Our commuter train, metro and local train services are powered solely by electricity from renewable sources.
Stockholm is growing, with an ever-increasing number of residents, and it is our responsibility to ensure that public transport keeps pace. This is why we are currently making major investments in public transport, including the extension of the metro to Barkarby, Nacka and Arenastaden.
Regional development
Stockholm County is the fastest-growing capital region in Europe. We are responsible for regional growth and development in the county. This entails creating the best conditions for Stockholm County to remain a leading, innovative and sustainable region. We are responsible for the county plan, infrastructure and the regional development plan for Stockholm County (RUFS).
Our mandate also includes providing county residents with a voice and unifying the county's other stakeholders – municipalities, businesses, academia and public authorities. Together we are working for the good of the Stockholm region.
Culture
Our cultural support provides opportunities for a diverse range of voices, stages and forms of expression within dance, film and art throughout the county. We provide grants to a broad range of cultural activities, including popular education providers and local associations. We are also the principal financier of the Stockholm Concert Hall and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Art helps create welcoming and safe public spaces and can aid wellbeing. Art also enriches our encounters with public transport and healthcare environments. Examples include the world's longest art exhibition – in the Stockholm metro system – and an art initiative involving contemporary Swedish artists at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.
As Stockholm continues to grow, our goal is to continue to contribute to a dynamic cultural life for residents and visitors alike.
