FAQ on process after application

Expressions of interest for our calls for submissions are initially assessed by the Department of Culture at Region Stockholm in collaboration with external art advisors.

The selection is then presented to representatives from the hospital, the construction company's project manager, and architects, who provide comments based on their areas of expertise.

Decisions regarding which artists to invite are made by the Head of the Department of Culture, on behalf of the Cultural Board of Region Stockholm.

The names of the artists will be disclosed upon the decision for the commission. Until then, the information is confidential.

In accordance with the Swedish law on Public access to information and secrecy, confidentiality applies for Region Stockholm until a decision is made on the allocation of the artistic commission. When the artistic commission is approved for production, the general rule is that relevant documents become available to the public and can be requested from Region Stockholm. This can include how many and who have applied, who have submitted a sketch proposal, what the submitted sketch proposals look like, and who have been allocated the artistic commission.

In certain situations, an artist can ask that confidentiality be applied to specific information. Whether the information can be subjected to secrecy provisions is limited and regulated by the Swedish law on Public access to information and secrecy. Region Stockholm will examine the validity of the artist’s claim on a case-by-case basis, and the decision can be challenged by the court.

Region Stockholm works based on the diversity represented by the visitors at the assignment site, such as a healthcare unit, and according to the conditions and context of that particular operation.

We aim for diversity, conceptual sustainability, material sustainability, and accessibility in the designs, as stated in the calls for proposals.

Diversity means that representation from various perspectives—such as techniques, materials, or narratives—should be included.

These four aspects of quality are considered during the evaluation process and serve as a tool for asking relevant and critical questions.

An artist who receives a design assignment is responsible for the production of their artwork, including budgeting and administration. The assignments often span several years.

The conditions are specified in each call for proposals.

The artist must adhere to Region Stockholm’s environmental requirements. Maintenance guidelines for the artwork are developed in dialogue with Kulturförvaltningen, which is responsible for the management of the art.

The art-project is part of an architectural context, which involves collaboration between many different stakeholders.

The projects include Kulturförvaltningen’s project manager, art advisors, the construction project’s site manager, architects, and operational representatives.

With extensive experience in producing art projects in healthcare environments, the art department supports the artist throughout the entire design assignment.

The healthcare services of Region Stockholm are located in Stockholm. We welcome expressions of interest from artists from other parts of Sweden and the world. If you are assigned a sketch commission, many meetings can take place digitally.

In some cases, you must be prepared to travel to Stockholm to engage with the project's specific context and possibly to deliver the sketch commission. If you are assigned a design commission, you will also need to travel to Stockholm for project meetings that cannot be held digitally and for the installation of the artwork.
